Monday, October 15: We started a new assignment today. Students (either by themselves or in partners) were given one Article of the United Declaration of Human Rights. Using this article they will be making a poster that represents it. Tomorrow is a double period so we will also be working on it for one period and then students will be given time to read/work on their Independent Novel Study (Due Nov. 9th). Friday, October 12:We went to the library today to choose novels for our independent novel study. Students will be given time in class next week to read/work on their assignment. Thursday, October 11: We went over some examples of assignments for their Independent Novel Study assignment. We then listened to the song "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" by U2 and answered questions on different literary devices. Homework: Students will be picking their novels tomorrow in class from the library. If students have a novel from home they would like to read, please bring it in tomorrow. Independent Novel Study: due November 9th. Wednesday, October 10: We finished "The Sniper" workbooklet and questions. Tuesday, October 9: Students were given back their Malala Drawing assessments. They were also given the outline for our Independent Novel study coming up. Students are asked to pick a novel by Friday. We then read the short story "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty as a class. We started to answer the questions - we will complete them tomorrow. Friday, October 5: P.D. day (no school) Thursday, October 4: We did a review of the literary terms as a review today (conflict, irony, point of view, elements of a story and theme). Students will be starting an independent novel this month. They are required to have a novel to read and bring to school. Wednesday, October 3: Students were given all class to type up a good copy of their letter and send it to me. Tuesday, October 2: Students finished their rough copies today. Some students started their good copy. Monday, October 1: We reviewed the format of a letter. Students started to write the rough copy of their letter today. Friday, September, 28: Today was a research period for their letter project. Thursday, September 27: Again, we reviewed the format of a letter and discussed our new project. Students are to research a clothing company and find their current industry practices and policies. Students will then write a letter to the company outlining their concerns and suggest some possible improvements. Today was a research period. Wednesday, September 26: We finished watching the documentary "Made in Bangladesh". We discussed the documentary and how it connected to our lives in Canada. We reviewed the format of a letter in preparation for our next project. Tuesday, September 25 (double period): During the first period we continued working on our Malala posters. Students started presenting their drawings/symbols to the class. During the second period we finished presenting. We started watching the documentary "Made in Bangladesh" (www.cbc.ca/player/play/2411698229/). Monday, September 24:We are continuing our unit on Global Citizens. We briefly reviewed what a Global Citizen is and what makes someone a "good" Global Citizen. We then started our "I am Malala" activity. We watched Malala Yousafzai's United Nations speech (www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRh_30C8l6Y) from 2013. While listening, students were asked to take some point form notes on important facts from her speech. When the video was finished, students were asked to draw a picture/symbol relating to the speech. Friday, September 21: Students did not have class today as they had a field trip to Winterton.
